Why do people worship, who do people worship, and where do people worship. The middle English definition of worship is reverence, respect and worthiness given to a divine being. From the Old English weorthscipe which means, respect, worthy. In Britain, worship is an act to a person of importance, various officials and magistrates. Worship is a form of religious practice with creed and rituals. To have excessive devotion or admiration to a person. Some synonyms for worship are idolatry adulation, deification and idolization.
Worship in religion refers to particular acts of devotion to one or more deities. Cultus is the term sociologists of religion use, the body of traditions and practices that relate to theology. Elements of worship are, prayer, rituals, sacrifice, dance, music and singing, and sometimes in a form of meditation. In our world, we have many religions, so we have different forms of worship. In Japan and China they have a form called ancestor worship. This refers to a ritualized invocation of dead relatives. This is founded on the belief that the dead person's spirit has the influence and power over the affairs of the living. Moslem's worship is in three repeated cycles, daily, weekly, and annual. The daily cycle worship is a prayer or prayers that Moslem's say five times a day. They are said at dawn, noon and just after sunset. It can be said anywhere the person is. In America, worship is usually celebrated in a church building. Still, people worship differently. Some people worship God alone. Some give praise and worship to the Virgin Mary. While others worship God the Father and Jesus Christ His Son as One. This is the true form of worship. To praise and worship the One who has given life.
